First held in 1987, the New Generation Concert aims at encouraging music creativity among young composers in Hong Kong by providing a platform for performance and exchange of musical ideas. To celebrate the 20th anniversary, the New Generation 2008 Concert is inviting both local and international submissions. Selected compositions will be performed at RTHK Studio One on June 12, 2008 and broadcast later.
Submission Details 1. The Call for Scores of the New Generation 2008 Concert is open to composers of any nationality born on or after June 1, 1978. 2. Eligible composers can only submit one work in the form of hardcopy score. No other medium of the score, such as PDF file or recording, is accepted. 3. The duration of each work should be within 4 – 6 minutes. An accurate duration of the work must be stated on the score. 4. All works must adopt the following instrumentation: 4 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, 1 double bass, 1 flute/piccolo, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon and 1 French horn. No other form of instrumentation is accepted. 5. All submissions must include three copies of the score, application fees (by cheque or payment copy [see items 6 and 7]) and a completed application form. They should reach Dr. Leung Chi-Cheung, Department of Creative Arts and Physical Education, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, 10 Lo Ping Road, Taipo, New Territories, Hong Kong, on or before March 31, 2008 (postmark). Late applications will not be considered. 6. Application fees Category A Waived for all members of the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild Limited (HKCG). Category B HK$200 for composers holding valid Hong Kong Identity Card who are not members of HKCG. Category C 20 Euros for composers who do not belong to the above two categories. 7. Payment of application fees Category B Payment should be made by cheque made payable to “Hong Kong Composers’ Guild Limited”. Category C Information will be available on the HKCG website www.hkcg.org in March 2008. Please do not send cash by post.
Selection Arrangement 1. A jury panel, appointed by the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild Limited, will select works on grounds of artistic merit and performance practicality. The decision of the jury panel is final. Results will be announced on April 15, 2008 through the HKCG website www.hkcg.org. Shortlisted composers will be notified by email. 2. Shortlisted composers must: ➢ provide parts and full scores, a short programme note and a biography (maximum 150 words each) in English (also in Chinese for composers from Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan) on or before April 28, 2008, ➢ attend rehearsals organized for the concert (for Hong Kong composers only). Composers from outside Hong Kong are welcome to attend the rehearsals and the concert. They should make travel and accommodation arrangements on their own at their own expense.
Award The jury panel will select the most outstanding work in the concert and will commission the composer to write a new work to be performed in the next New Generation Concert.
